Community Service Activities Each year employees participate in "Company Day" which is our special way of enhancing the community and furthering company togetherness. Major landscape projects have been donated to: Children's Inn at NIH, Hospice Caring, National Center for Children & Families, Winter Growth, Casa de Maryland, Stepping Stones Shelter, Ivymount School and Eastern Middle School. Community Service Activities BDO COUNTS! is the community service program of the Greater Washington DC Metro office of the national accounting firm BDO Seidman, LLP. The CVC guided its creation in 2004 and continues to assist our all-volunteer planning committee. Activities over the last year included team building through a day of outdoor projects for the Menare Foundation’s Underground Railroad Living-History Museum in Seneca Creek State Park., a third year of end-of-growing season gardening at the National Center for Children and Families in Bethesda, a fundraising walk for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at Light the Night in Rockville, plus collections of school supplies for the Bethesda Kids in Need Drive, Wish List donations and Holiday Giving. Community Service Activities A number of years ago we decided to forego our annual holiday party and instead donate the money we would have spent on the party to the Montgomery County Infants and Toddlers Program. They used the money to buy Giant Food Gift Cards, allowing families to have a holiday meal who might otherwise not have been able to. The first year, our contribution was just a few hundred dollars; this year the amount was $2,000. Last month we completed volunteer teaching a six-week Adult Computer Literacy class on the basics of how to use a computer. For most of our students English is their second language and their primary access to a computer is at their local library. When we started, many were afraid of the keyboard. After just one evening a week for six weeks they were creating resumes in MS Word. I am thrilled to say that registration for a new 12 week class has been filled and we are building on skills we instilled during our first semester.

Smokey Glen Farm provides logistics, support & refrigerated storage for our clients to donate their leftover picnic food to D.C. Central Kitchen, who in turn processes and redistributes the food to numerous shelters & help organizations throughout the Metro area. Through these brilliant efforts, they are able to provide extensive foodservice career training for underprivileged individuals. In 2004, our clients donated over 30,500 lbs. of food providing the basis for an estimated 70,000 meals. In September of 2005 we hosted a huge community picnic and fundraiser for the Montgomery County Public Safety Memorial which will honor our fallen Fire & Rescue, Police, Sheriff’s Department, Park Police and Corrections Department personnel. The Memorial, a public-private partnership, will be built at the Public Safety Training Academy in Rockville. It will be a beautiful, lasting and moving tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our community. The Greater Washington Area is such a wonderful place to have grown our family business. We appreciate that this community has been so supportive of us over these many years.
